What is the Drip Content Plugin?

The Drip Content plugin allows you to distribute in-app content in a slide-by-slide format.

Content on each slide is unlocked after a certain amount of time or based on specific user actions.

This plugin is perfect for any scenario where you want to create a step-by-step guided user experience.

Drip Content Plugin Features Explained

The Drip Content plugin functions with just a handful of key features.

  • Slides — Screens that the user sees containing any type of content.

  • Actions — What happens when a user clicks a button on a slide.

  • Slide Activation — Timer for when the next slide will be available to the user.

  • Local Notification — Message sent to the user when a timer-based slide is unlocked.

Each slide can display whatever type of content or function that you want. Slides could contain text, videos, web content, and more.

You can even use Drip Content to string together multiple plugins in a single environment. For example, after a user completes an action on a slide (such as watching a video), the next slide could link to the Free Text Questionnaire plugin. Free Text Questionnaire can be used for user surveys.

Common Use Cases For the Drip Content Plugin

There are lots of different ways to apply the Drip Content plugin to your app. Here are some examples of ways we’ve seen the plugin used in the past:

  • Learning management systems

  • Stories

  • 30-day home workouts

  • Travel guides

  • 21-day fitness challenges

  • Selling courses

The plugin is extremely useful for fitness apps. For example, you can design a 30-day home workout where each slide (new workout) is unlocked 24 hours after the previous workout was completed.

How to Use the Drip Content Plugin

Using the Drip Content plugin is as simple as creating slides and determining how the next slide will be available. These are the two tutorials that you can follow below.

  • How to Create Slides

  • How to Activate Slides by Time

Use these step-by-step guides to apply the Drip Content plugin within your own app.

How to Create a Slides

Every piece of content displayed in the Drip Content plugin will be facilitated through a slide. Each slide contains new information and an action.

Step #1: Click “Add Slide”

Once the plugin has been installed from the App Marketplace, locate the plugin within your app, and click the green “add slide” button.

You’ll eventually be adding multiple slides to the sequence. For example, if you’re creating a 21-day workout challenge, you’ll have at least 21 slides.

Step #2: Add an Action

Each slide will contain some form of content containing an action. There will be a CTA button on the slide coinciding with the action you’re choosing in this step.

Click on the “+” button at the top of the “Timeline Action Slide” section, as shown above.

From here, you can choose an image icon to associate with the action, along with the action itself, and the CTA text. Here’s an example of what that looks like when it’s fully populated:

For this example, I chose the “Link to App Content” as the action type. Then I selected YouTube as the connected plugin.

My action button text is “Watch Video,” and I’ll keep building the first slide of a fitness program as we continue. As you can see, the image icon fits the type of content associated with this slide.

Step #3: Add an Action Slide Title and Description

This step is pretty self-explanatory. Just fill in the form fields for “Action Slide Title” and “Description.”

In this example, the slide title I chose was “Day 1 - Upper Body” and the description conveys more information.

There is a 20-character limit to all action slide titles. The description can be as in-depth as you want. You can even write descriptions in paragraph form for longer content. Users will be able to scroll within the app to view all of the text.

For this example, we’re linking to a YouTube video for an upper-body workout. But you could also write out the complete workout with instructions in this description.

Step #4: Save and Repeat

By default, all new slides will be available after the user completes the designated action. For example, once an app user finishes the first workout, they’ll be able to move on to the next day.

Here’s an what that first slide would look like on the user-end once you’ve saved the changes.

If you don’t change the slide activation settings, the next slide will automatically appear after the action is complete.

The next slide in this sequence could look something like this:

Learn how to keep slides locked based on timing by following the step-by-step instructions below.

How to Activate Slides by Time

As previously described, slides will automatically be available after an action is completed by the user. However, you have the ability to restrict slide availability by setting a timer to start after that specific action is finished.

These steps begin within the add/edit slide area. By now, you’ve already added an action, title, and description.

Step #1: Toggle the Activation Timer On

Find this switch in the “On Taking Action” section of the edit slide page. All of the settings and actions here will be greyed out by default.

Once you’ve toggled this button and it turns green, you’ll be able to edit the activation settings.

Step #2: Customize the Timer Settings

Next, just fill in the form fields for when you want the next slide to be available. In this example, we’ve been building a 30-day workout. So I set the next slide to activate one day after the first slide was finished.

But you can customize this in any way that you see fit.

  • Hours

  • Minutes

  • Days

  • Months

Use any number for these units of time.

Step #3: Set a Local Notification

The local notification will appear within the app once the next slide is available.

For example, let’s say an app user completes the first day of a workout sequence. Based on the settings in the previous step, day two won’t be available until tomorrow. When that same user opens the app the next day, they’ll see the local notification customized in this step.

In this case, “Today’s workout is ready!” fits perfectly.

Step #4: Save and Repeat

Save your settings and continue this process until you’ve completed the entire guided user experience.

Here’s a look at what the app user will see if the content is locked based on the timer you’ve created:

In this case, the “Day 2 - Yoga” workout is unavailable. At the bottom of the screen, users can see the content will appear “in a day.”

Pro Tips For the Drip Content Plugin

After seeing successful apps built using the Drip Content plugin, we’ve learned the best practices for taking full advantage of its functionality. Keep these pro tips and mind as you’re customizing the Drip Content plugin for your own app.

Pro Tip #1: Leverage Behavior Tagging

Add behavior tags to your slides. You can manage this from the “Tagging” tab within the plugin settings.

By pairing the behavior tags with actions, each time users complete a slide within your sequence, the progress will automatically be saved to their profile.

For example, let’s say one of your actions links to the Free Text Questionnaire plugin. If you have a behavioral tag on that questionnaire, that tag would be applied to the user profile. So if the survey was tagged with something like “Day 10” of a 30-day challenge, then you’d know exactly where users were in the sequence.

Pro Tip #2: View User Analytics

In addition to behavior tagging specific actions, you can always navigate to the “Analytics” tag to see how far along users are within the sequence of the slides. You can get daily statistics over a 30, 60, or 90 day period. The analytics tab will even help identify your top users.

Overall, this information can be vital for determining how successful your slides are.

If you have 30 slides, and none of the app users are getting past slide #10, you may want to go back and make changes to get people further along in the sequence.

Pro Tip #3: Monetize

The Drip Content plugin is great for those of you looking for ways to monetize your app.

You can use it to create slides within a single purchase app. Alternatively, you can create slides with in-app purchases or in-app subscriptions for access to content. All of this can be managed within the “Purchase” tab of the plugin settings.
